MRI Case 4

41 y/o F presents for diagnostic MRI. What is the internal enhancement characteristic of the mass?

RIM ENHANCEMENT

  • Enhancement is more pronounced at the periphery of the mass
  • If seen in a solid mass -> suspicious for IDC
  • Cysts can enhance peripherally but are also bright on T2 sequence (i.e. inflammatory cyst)
  • Fat necrosis may have rim enhancement but centrally has low signal, lower than that of the surrounding fat (“black hole”)
